I bet I have murdered more trees than you. The problem with spikes is not in the chain saw? What does a felling saw blade cost, a few hundred bucks max for carbide or diamond coat -- cut through spikes like butter, easily rerivited if bust.
The problem is those damned log lathe blades in veneer mills that cost thousands. But it is easy to prevent these disasters. Hardwood veneer mills routinely scan their logs with metal detectors. Why should softwood mills do the same?
