E. Graphs, re: "The United States still tops the computer infrastructure segment, but its weakness relative to the Nordic nations in the social infrastructure has played a role in Sweden's movement to the number-one spot overall, the study reveals. IDC believes it is critical to have a well-rounded strategy for developing an Information Society. "The penetration of PCs does not guarantee the strength of a digital economy," Toolan said. "Instead, all infrastructures -- computer, Internet, information, and social -- must be a strong interwoven body that works together to support the Information Society. Sweden understands this need for a balanced approach." ----- Sounds like IDC is pushing a socialist agenda. I notice there was no reference to Sweden's ~20% unemployment rate, while the USA has a 4.0% unemployment rate, and IT depts here in the USA are loudly bemoaning the high number of unfilled jobs, and the necessity of handing out lavish incentives to attract skilled IT workers. I have nothing against Sweden. I visited there twice in the past 7 months (August 99 & Jan 2000). Actually I like all the Nordic countries. I have visited Finland, Sweden, and Norway, and of the three, Finland is the most internet-enabled. And now re: "The research includes 1998 actual data and 1999 estimates for 23 different variables spanning four infrastructure categories: information, Internet, computer, and social. A forthcoming report in the ISI will include forecasts through 2003. The data sets are drawn from highly reliable sources including IDC [nothing like patting yourself on the back there], UNESCO, ITU, World Bank, and Freedom House." ------ World Bank? Isn't that the one that hands out multi-billion dollar financial rescue packages to Malaysia, Brazil, Russia, etc? And "Freedom House"? Never heard of them, but it sounds like a political action group. PS - I have no idea what your rationale was to post that article on a Market Direction Discussion thread, but I decided to respond to it, since I dislike companies like IDC pushing socialist agendas wrapped up in "research report" formats.
