You miss the point. First of all, we're talking about public behavior and cast of mind as an officer of government. Bush's public life, Bush's behavior and cast of mind and judgement in that interview, in reference to a matter of concern to all citizens, is damning.

Second, gimme a break, you wanna hold past marital infidelity and divorce, by themselves (Clinton's sexual incontinence in the Oval Office is another matter), against a man, go ahead, but I don't choose my Presidents that way. So by your reasoning, woe to the former POW who gets a divorce? This is sleazy behind-the-back-whispering. Suddenly we're very far from choosing a President. Go ahead and find yourself a nice talentless, bland, white-bread nothing who never got a divorce or had personal problems--you'll get what you deserve. Who are you to judge John McCain's remote personal life? You wanna go after Shrubbie for his naked bar dancing, impregnating, cocaine snorting, alcoholic past life, too? Be my guest. You'll notice I never brought that into this discussion.

Third, McCain has spoken eloquently, inspiringly, admirably on his mistake and shame in being peripherally associated with Keating five. And his association WAS peripheral. He has impressive integrity.

No Governors would endorse Reagan in 1976. That's what happens when you buck the establishment.
