LOS ANGELES (Dow Jones)--Acclaim Entertainment Inc. (AKLM) shares soared
38.5% on Tuesday. A company spokeswoman cited strong sell-through of the
video-game maker's new wrestling title, but analysts said acquisition rumors
were more likely the cause.
"ECW: Hardcore Revolution," which shipped on the Sony PlayStation and
Nintendo 64 formats on Feb. 17, "is selling through very well," said Michelle
Seebach, a spokeswoman for Acclaim. The title will launch on Sega Dreamcast
format in the next few weeks, she said.
Acclaim is also a minority investor in Extreme Championship Wrestling, a
league that competes with the World Wrestling Federation Entertainment (WWFE)
and World Championship Wrestling, Seebach said.
Extreme Championship Wrestling has less of a story line than its
competitors, and that has proved popular with wrestling fans, Seebach said.
"It's just really hardcore and it focuses on the wrestling," she said.
Acclaim's shares closed Tuesday at 4 1/2, up 1 1/4, on volume of 4.4 million
shares, compared with average daily volume of 1.3 million.
Analysts said ECW: Hardcore Revolution, while a key title for Acclaim,
probably couldn't by itself account for such a bold rise. More likely, they
said, there was a resurfacing of recent acquisition rumors.
Acclaim has been hurt by a market shift away from the Nintendo 64 format,
and needs to wean itself away from dependence on the one format, said Brian
Goodstadt, an analyst with S&P Equity Group.
The Glen Cove, N.Y., company's shares hit a 52-week low of 3 on Jan. 18.
With the stock so low, rumors have surfaced that Acclaim could be bought out,
analysts said. No one, however, had heard any specific rumors on Tuesday.
"I think Acclaim's a takeover play right now," said Michael P. Wallace, an
analyst with Warburg Dillon Read LLC in New York.
Names mentioned in the past as possible suitors for Acclaim include
competitor Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS); traditional toy companies like Mattel
Inc. (MAT) and Hasbro Inc. (HAS), who are trying to get into the interactive
game market; and even Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), which could add an on-line
dimension to Acclaim's repertoire.
Acclaim also could be close to announcing an Internet partnership or
acquisition, Goodstadt said.
