Paul, RE: MIT has always emphasized SYSTEM-type research, and this is a good case in point I took a class on parallel computing in my grad school where the prof. taught their research in this area. I was very impressed by the work they did. Maybe Itanium will spur the research in that area now. Do you know that there is a prof there named Aravind who is working on data flow computing. This was a very neat concept where the hardware would be utilized for {FETCH;DECODE:EXECUTE} and rest of the burden of dependencies is shifted to compilers, extracting parallelism. Given the complexities of the compilers this never took off. Although he thought it was possible. I bet he still believes it is possible. mula
