(Just for accuracies sake can I point out that the lawyers only get approximately the usual 33% and shareholders get 67% of any settlement against a company? What you mean to say is that after the shareholder's take is divided amongst themselves, the average individual shareholder gets a very small fraction of what the law firm takes in, almost certainly less than 1%.)

Sigmund... excuse my ignorance, but why would those put options still be open? Wouldn't the stock simply be "put" to the sellers of the contract? Doesn't that automatically close the position?
