Honduras says 7 firms bid on phone company

MEXICO CITY, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Honduras said on Monday that seven international telecommunications companies had presented bids in the government's auction of a 51 percent stake in state telephone company Hondutel.

The Finance Ministry said France Telecom , Mexico's Telmex (NYSE:TMX - news) and Avantel had placed bids. MCI WorldCom (NasdaqNM:WCOM - news) holds a 45 percent stake in Avantel.

Other bidders were Spain's Telefonica de Espana , through a subsidiary, Chile's Entel , Global Crossing LTD (NasdaqNM:GBLX - news) of the United States, and India's Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd .

Honduras expects to announce the winner of the auction in May and complete the transaction in June, Finance Minister Gabriela Nunez said.

Hondutel operates 279,000 fixed telephone lines and has requests for some 600,000 more than it has not been able to meet because of its limited finances.

*As you noted, Robert, this is simply an opportunity to buy more. Let's make more money off of the ignorant, shall we?!*

I was buying for myself as well as my friends today.
