John;

I just took delivery of a new Dell dimension xps 733 alomg with an HP 882c. The machine has a CD-drive, Cd-burner, and an nvidia TNT geforce video card, etc, etc.

The upgrade from Win 98 Se to Win 2000 Pro took just over 25 minutes, and I'm happy to report that it found a driver for every single piece of hardware on the system.

I'm currently running office 2000, adaptec ez cd creator, links ls 2000, age of empires, and Sierra's Pharoh, again all with no problem. I did have a problem with my old version of Norton antivirus, and with Red Storm's Rogue Spear.(that's why I keep 98 around)

Yes, Windows 2000 Professional is targeted at the business user, but as djia101362 points out, you can certainly run it home.(or at least dual boot it)

Just an FYI.

JFD, I've got W2K running on two computers so far. One is a Celeron 300, Matrox Mistique, USR Winmodem, and HP 722C printer. This computer is having a problem w/ the sound card, a Diamond Monster Sound M300. According to Diamond's website, they do not have a W2K driver (did not sound like they were going to make one either) and suggest using Aureal's driver which I have yet to try. I normally use this computer for web stuff only and don't turn on the sound anyway, so no problem. The computer did ask for HP722C CD during installation to find the driver. I suppose the next time I want to listen to some webcast, I'll try to resolve the soundcard problem.

I've also got W2K running on a P233MMX, SB16 soundcard, CL Banshee, and Diamond el cheapo modem. This computer runs fine w/o any problems and I did not have to load any drivers manually. The CL Banshee runs on a Voodoo chipset.

I think the problem was with Voodoo3 support, and not Voodoo2 or Voodoo1. If I am not mistaken, W2K Voodoo3 drivers are now out. If you check some of those techie websites I'm sure you'll read about it somewhere.

Both computers are using IE which W2K loads automatically. Also no free ride for AOL this time around. AOL is not pre-loaded with W2K and at the present time, AOL does not have a NT compatible version. According to AOL one should be out shortly. I actually tried loading AOL 5.0 and it works to a certain extent. It seems to work fine until you shut it down and then the program hangs but all you have to do is shut it down manually in the task manager.

How do you get an IDE harddisk work under Windows 2000? Why isn't my mainstream motherboard supported by Windows 2000? It is supported by Windows NT and Windows 98!! "You may now turn of your computer" - but the on/off button is deactivated... Windows 2000 really has some special experiences built-in.

Unfortunately, some users will have bad experiences with Windows 2000, especially people thinking it's a successor of Windows 98, that don't understand why it doesn't turn off itself and why USB isn't as supported as in Win98.

It's a risky thing calling it Windows 2000. Hopefully, it will sell a lot of NT technology to Windows 98 people, increasing earnings for MS, but it might also make some people unhappy about taking steps backwards technologically.
And several games that work with Win98, don't work on Win2000. Games are the key to home users...

By the way: Did you know that the danish version of Microsoft Internet Explorer isn't able to view many U.S. web pages with active content, because MS translated the API used in the webpages to danish? I think it's the same for other languages. I had to install Netscape on several computers to make Yahoo! work...
