t36: Since I just mentioned JDSU, here is what I understand. JDSU is a widget maker (highly technical term :-)). Or to put it slightly more seriously, JDSU makes fiberoptics components - both active and passive. Its major customers are the likes of Lucent and Nortel which use them in fiberoptic systems which they sell.

Corning does have some in house fiber optic component production and it recently bought a small component supplier and is often mentioned as a possible buyer of SDLI which is JDSU's smaller (but excellent) fiberoptics components competitor and supplies Corning now - as does JDSU as I understand it.

Right now JDSU is capacity constrained. That is why it is buying ETEK. Demand exceeds its ability to supply so JDSU is running full speed to try to increase its fiberoptics capacity for its markets. (Not too bad a position to be in when the overall technology is experiencing explosive growth.)

For what it might be worth, since George Gilder is in the news now, he has JDSU and Corning among his "ascendant technology" companies. Corning is huge relative to JDSU and much more diversified of course.

Suggest you check out the JDSU thread on SI:

Hope this helps.
