The term "ego" is new, Dan, but the concept it describes is as old as the human race. "Ego", of course, means simply "I AM" in Latin. By extension, beyond that personal ego, there is also "WE ARE": family ego; group ego; ethnic ego; national ego. The corollary of I AM is -- YOU ARE NOT. The corollary of WE ARE is THEY ARE NOT. This is more than simple selfishness ("I want mine and the hell with you!"). We are talking about the inability of the human individual, the human group, to reach out beyond the limits of his/its ego, to identify with, to understand, The Other, often even when there is the desire to do so! This may not be the cause of most Human Error (in the sense of intellectual errors), but I am convinced 100% that is the cause of most of the Misery we inflict on one another! And if anyone is looking for a candidate for The Original Sin, I nominate Ego!!! Joan
