I don't think John Q Public buys puts or calls... are the professionals more bearish? Some surely are. But publically many are not.

However, if I had a mess of puts to buy, I wouldn't be telling the public a crash is around the corner either.

At any rate, these are only guides. Price will tell all...

Wouldn't this be considered a contrarian bullish indicator?
