Toshiba Is First Licensee of Geoworks Patented WAP Technology
Wireless Communications Giant Leads Industry Recognition of Geoworks Intellectual Property Rights
ALAMEDA, Calif., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Geoworks Corporation (Nasdaq: GWRX - news), a pioneer in wireless data communications services and technologies, today announced that Toshiba Corporation is the first to finalize a licensing agreement for Geoworks' patented flexible user interface (Flex UI) technology. Flex UI technology is an essential element of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), the emerging global standard for mobile communications. Geoworks has licensed its patented technology to Toshiba for use in a series of handset devices.

``Toshiba joined our licensing program very shortly after it was announced, demonstrating that Geoworks' licensing structure is well-received by one of the leaders in the wireless communications industry,' said Don Ezzell, General Counsel of Geoworks Corporation. ``Leveraging our technology, Toshiba can significantly advance the emerging market for WAP-enabled products and the realization of a single, open standard for mobile devices.'

About Geoworks Flex UI Licensing Program

Developed in accordance with the WAP Forum's guidelines on asserting Intellectual Property Rights for WAP and WML, Geoworks' licensing structure is designed to foster the growth of emerging WAP markets and provide its technology through standard industry practices. Geoworks informed all WAP Forum members in January that its patented technology is employed as an essential component of the WAP standard.

Geoworks has posted on its web site (www.geoworks.com) a white paper entitled ``The Geoworks Wireless Internet Patent: Invention and Innovation in Flexible User Interface Technology.' The white paper details many issues of interest to WAP Forum members and non-members, including licensing details, legal issues and technical information.
