Canada farm group takes govt to task for Prairie woes
By Irene Marushko

WINNIPEG, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Canada's 11,000-member National Farmers Union on Thursday told the Canadian government to stop blaming the European Union and start blaming large corporations for the deep financial crisis on Prairie farms.

``They're (Canada's government) are going to have to make sure some sort of competition exists,' NFU vice-president Fred Tait told reporters in Winnipeg.

The NFU released a study stating the government's favorite excuse for low commodity prices -- overproduction resulting from heavy subsidies by the EU to its producers -- was incorrect.

``There is no evidence that had the EU not supported its farmers that its production today would be lower or the income crisis less severe,' Tait said.
