Dinesh, this is a quickie response before I head out for the rest of the week:

1) Switching costs: AKAM's customers are web site creators. I don't believe that they "switch ISPs" like you and I do. I doubt that they switch hosting sites at the drop of a hat either. I am sure that when they do switch hosters, all of their software goes with them, including AKAM or ISLD or XLA.

2) I specifically called it a Shiny Pebble at this point. I think it could fall into the Apps Gorilla class. I have not invested, because I would have to sell a gorilla to get a shiny pebble today. When I get some more cash, I might buy a starter set. <g> I wasn't around for the QCOM cash-o-rama. <ggg>

3) I think speedy content delivery is a key component of ANY web site, especially as the web site grows and the content becomes richer. See the website members.xoom.com I have a link to a CacheFlow white paper that explains the math behind network-induced latency that you address. In your example, you have delivered one request to the web server. There are many more to go.

4) "Smarter" DNS will solve some of this, certainly. It is employed by XLA to some degree. No matter how smart, though, there's nothing like being next door for quick delivery. NOTHING.

Hope this helps. I'd love to go into more detail, but I gotta run catch a plane. If you want more, a) read my stuff on the website -- it's a lot more detailed, and b) post back more questions, and I'll try to get them tonight.
