Looking around for a new computer today, trying out new monitors before anything else....

I had my mind set on getting a Sony monitor because none of the others seemed to measure up. The sales guy told me that the NEC had a Trinitron screen that was even better than the Sony models being phased out (several stores are opting not to carry the Sony models any more it seems). I ended up buying a new 17" NEC MultiSync FE700, it has a totally flat screen and is niiiice (OK so I'm upgrading from a 15" monitor). Not quite as friendly as a flat screen display, but bigger and cheaper. Only $50 more, a fresh new unit (not a demo), and has a 3-year warranty instead of the Sony's 1-year. Overall a good value for the money.

I was looking around at other stuff to build a new computer, one of the guys I spoke with recommended getting a regular CD-ROM in addition to the CDRW that I intend to purchase. His reasoning was that the CDRW would wear out quicker if used all the time like a normal CD-ROM. Is this just a bunch of bunk? I think he was just trying to sell me another CD-ROM.... I don't use the CD-ROM very much anyways so I don't see it as being much of an issue.

PS, I am thinking of going the ABIT BP6 route. Dual 366MHz Celerons possibly overclocked, 128MB RAM, tower case with 300W power supply, ATI Xpert99, Plextor or HP9110i 8x4x32 CDRW, etc. etc.

I have a friend (yes, moms do have friends apart from their kids!) who is in the market for a color inkjet printer for printing photos.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. By the way, it doesn't have to be the cheapest!

Sue :)
