I went to Ask Jeeves web site and asked " Why is everyone starting to lose money in Ask Jeeves?". This was one of the answers. LOL

Risk Tolerance
For most investors, "losing money" or "doing something that feels uncomfortable" are commonly expressed definitions of "risk". Funny how those paper losses didn't mean anything until the security is sold and now the loss becomes very real. Or how bout those hedging techniques your financial advisor is talking about? "Oh well, I heard about them but those are just for those aggressive professionals, not me. That won't reduce my portfolio risk."

Financial risk is not necessarily related to the amount of risks you take in everyday life. High rise window washers may be very conservative investors while engineers may be very aggressive investors. Identifying your personal risk tolerance will help you determine the type of investments to investment in and if you are on track to achieving your retirement goals. The greater the financial risks the greater the chances you have for gaining as well as losing money. If you are the conservative type, your investment strategy may be too safe to ever reach your goals.

Everyone has their own unique personal goals and ideas on what they want their retirement life to be. There is no single way to assess your risk tolerance. It is very subjective. No matter if we have the same income level and financial goals, your perception of risk and mine may be quite different. Nonetheless, it is important to take the time to ask yourself how much risk am I willing to assume to meet my financial goals and still be able to sleep at night. Take a questionnaire by Prudential Securities and Valic to help you determine your risk tolerance.
