Mac failed to license too, qlong

You're exactly right about Sony. Damn, weren't they arrogant? They squandered an incredible technology.

QCOM has a much more enlightened set of operating officers. They license very carefully (except for the sweet deal to Motorola) and don't give it away. But they appear to have given the Chinese a pretty good deal. They know they control the "crown jewels" and are very patient with respect to letting people play with them. I think they are demanding Nokia gets on its knees. Motorola will be looking for their knees soon as well. JMHO.

Apple turned out to be too protective of their technology and didn't seem to be as hungry as IBM. I could never figure that company out. Too naive maybe. Probably a lack of corporate history, lack of supply chain, and inability to pressure distributors the way IBM could do so. They didn't have Sony's arrogance. Just lack of experience playing in the big sandbox.
