Methanol is used instead of hydrogen gas. It is
converted to hydrogen by catalyst, then mixed
with oxygen (from air) and generate water and
electricity.

I read news about potentially using methanol cartridge
like cigarette liter to power laptop computer... sounds
cool. not to mention EV's...

I'm mystified by this technology. We have to provide the hydrogen gas of course. We get it by burning coal and using the
electricity generated to hydrolyze water. Then we have to store the H2 under high pressure. Could all this possibly be cheaper
than burning hydrocarbons???? IMHO when the world runs out of oil we'll be burning fuel made from hydrogenation of coal. That
technology dates from World War I.
Offhand, fuel cells burning hydrogen look to me like a non-tornado.
