But what a neat thing to do! I think people WANT these things. But are shy and afraid to appear different. Yes, I think that people DO want these things. I've often noticed that when people know it's "OK" to speak, to tell poems or jokes, play instruments, or play the part of a "character" as at a masquerade party, that many of them seem to get a lot of enjoyment out of the experience. It becomes a bit like the idea of "carnival"... the freedom to express yourself and act out in some way. It seems like such a healthy thing to do... I think our present way of "being"... of feeling like we might be doing something stupid or wrong is very repressive. BTW, I used to do quite a lot of continuing ed teaching and was always rather surprised at how inhibited people can be when in a typical "teacher-student" setting. Very weird. It was like being in a room full of 6 year olds with 40+ human skins. If I stood at the front of the room lecturing, it was very hard to disrupt that kind of response. I soon started having people sit on top of their desks and I'd sit with them. Then I would say, "I'm not teaching, I'm just sharing what I know. If you feel like speaking up with questions, opinions, or ideas, or if I'm not telling you what you want to know, just say so". Rather amazing how the dynamics of learning can be changed so easily. Also rather frightening to see how "programmed" people are that, even as adults, they often have a difficult time working up the nerve to ask a question while in a classroom situation. Definitely not a good thing.... says something about how we learn about "power".. I think your friend's idea of bringing readings to a party is fantastic. So is your idea about reading through a play... That would be really neat with the right group of people. I might give that a try pretty soon... Thanks for telling us about it.
