Newbridge delays third-quarter results release

Reuters, Feb 22, 2000 20:08 hrs

OTTAWA Feb 22 (Reuters) - Takeover watch candidate Newbridge Networks Corp. (TSE:NNC)(NYSE:NN) said late on Tuesday it had postponed the release of its third-quarter results indefinitely.

The financial results for the quarter ended January 30 -- due for release on Tuesday evening -- have been "postponed until further notice," said Newbridge spokeswoman Sarah Miller.

The surprising turn of events followed a late-day trading halt in both Newbridge and France's telecoms equipment maker Alcatel (SBF:CGEP), fueling speculation that Alcatel was poised to announce its purchase of Newbridge.

Newbridge's board of directors has approved Alcatel's takeover bid on Monday night, but wanted to allow Alcatel to announce the deal, a source close to the deal told Reuters.

Analysts are now uncertain when they will receive either financial results or news of a takeover.

"We talked to the company, they will not say anything," said Duncan Stewart, fund manager at Tera Capital Corp.

The consensus from 17 brokers polled by First Call/Thomson Financial was a profit of 11 cents per share for the quarter, though many analysts suggested Newbridge could beat that number by a penny or two.

A source close to Newbridge said the quarter was "very strong" and sales in North America, which had been a weak spot in previous quarters, were up "significantly". e-mail susan.taylor1@reuters.com, fax 613-235-5890))
