Satyam Infoway gets DoT licence for 5 more international gateways

FEBRUARY 22: Satyam Infoway Ltd, the premier Internet service provider in the country, has at long last won its battle with the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) by getting licence from Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for establishing five additional international gateways in the country.

The company will now be able to provide direct connectivity to the customers to access the Internet through the international gateways which are to be located in Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Cochin. It will sign an agreement on the international gateway facility with DoT on Wednesday, it is learnt.

The opening up of the gateways, industry sources said, would enable the company to provide guaranteed service to customers and not just "best efforts" as is promised by other service providers. Also the company so far had to hook on from its Chennai hub to different cities but still had to rely on VSNL to get its international connectivity. The traffic load has been quite heavy creating enormous pressure and delays for Internet users because of the limited bandwidth problem.

But with international gateways in five different locations, the company expects to facilitate faster access to the Internet for customers from different parts of the country.

Also the company, it is said, will be able to look at international connectivity with lot more confidence as it can ensure increased throughputs which are now said to be terribly unpredictable.

At present, the available gateways allow a throughput of not more than one to two kbps. But with additional gateways, the company expects this to go up substantially and is working out the configuration required to ensure higher throughputs, it is said.

The new international gateways will also enable users to access globally available data faster. As of now, users have to wait for quite a while after making a query and to be able to download the information as they are able to access only a small portion of the storehouse of information that is available from international databases.

While the company was not required to pay any fee to DoT for getting the licence to be an Internet service provider (ISP), it has to fork out Rs 1 lakh for the five additional gateways it has got licence for (Rs 20,000 per gateway as processing fee). Satyam Infoway will also be able to meet all its additional bandwidth requirements now, it is said. The company has been battling with VSNL for a long time to get additional bandwidth. But now with its own gateways it can meet its full requirements of 120 mega bits per second (mbps) as against existing facility of 92 mbps. The cost per 2 mbps bandwidth works out to Rs 42 lakh.

The gateways are expected to dramatically improve the quality of bandwidths and enable the company to provide cost effective bandwidths.

Even though the company has to reckon with a key infrastructure problem like poor phone, the new gateways will be a big boost to the ISP as it can make the job of accessing global information via the Internet faster.
