I've got mixed feelings about shorting. On the plus side it is temporizing (or at least could be) to speculative investing. On the negative side it adds to volatility [and sometimes bizarre action] on lower liquidity equities. For the time being I'm agnostic on the idea.

3) Why not outlaw short selling while you're at it?

Sounds like a modest proposal you have there :-)

Maybe we should outlaw downticks.

You'd actually be doing MOST of them a favor (note I did not say ALL, especially excluding the astute shorters on this tread....), since they shoot themselves in the foot frequently.
