I wouldn't even want to guess at what the percentage is for mammals- but harems are efficient, and mammals need to be efficient- at least the big mammals need to be because they put so much effort into procreation. They can't afford to make errors in resource allocation. They don't have the kind of reproductive potential that a mouse or a rat has.

You need to look at their reproductive strategy- is it similar to our own? If it isn't you wouldn't expect their mating behavior to be like our own. Reptile and fish strategies are very dissimilar. So you need to look for animals that have few young and have a great deal invested in those young- in terms of time and resources. That eliminates the rodent problem. I believe Bull giraffes do have harems, maybe a bit more research is needed there. Bulls will fight over females- but they limit it to head swinging. Just the thought makes me queasy. Bull elephants visit females to mate and the big bulls will fight over females. Bull elephants go through a period of rut much like deer do - and they not only injure other males they can injure females as well. I am sorry to inform you that hippo harems are also led by bulls- young males are evicted at sexual maturity. I'm guessing you didn't take a lot of biology, while, as you know my subject was biology. I certainly wouldn't challenge you in your area of expertise, but you do not seem as reliable in mine.
