Yeah... I read the Washington Post and the Washington Times today to get different takes on the story (the Times is always more conservative.. :0) I believe it was in the Post where I read that Bejing had compromised on the state to state status.

That's the one thing that the Chinese govt excels at though, bluster. China is a military paper tiger who can only really threaten those nations that border it. When it comes to making war across the water they have no history or practical experience (except for when that Japanese "Divine Wind" sank the Mongol fleet adding the word "Kamikaze" to our vocabulary).

And the last military experience they had of any note was when the Vietnamese chewed their butts up in that nasty border bash attempt to punish Hanoi for invading Cambodia and cuddling up to Moscow (although they eventually won through force of numbers).

Not to underestimate the Chinese as a people or as individual soldiers. But human wave assaults against Taiwan would make it only as far as the beach... China's beach, that is.

Same reason that Hitler nixed the idea of invading England and attempted to bomb them into submission. (and that was only 20 miles distance between Calais and Dover).

Regards,

Ron

DMA & Ron-

Oh yeah, well as we used to say in the principal's office, "But them's fighten' words!"

Larry

P.S. Ron, I understand that historical parallels can be treacherous, but they do reflect an invariant human nature. And Hitler, when he crossed the Rhine, also was a "paper tiger". I am more inclined than some to take dictatorships at their word when they announce their intent. And I think at this point, intent, not military capability is of primary importance. And it is time, I think, for the US it make its intent clear.
