Every poll I have seen shows Bush-Gore about even, and McCain-Gore at McCain about 20 points ahead...so why would Democrats conspire to get McCain the nomination? Doesn't that seem to be against their best interest?

You forget that McCain has told the religious conservatives to shove it.

McCain would lose the entire South to Gore. So too, for the East. And Buchanan will be there to take those that the "moderates" thought had nowhere else to go.

That Buchanan skim will come entirely out of the GOP vote. As a consequence, McCain would be lucky to do better than Dole in popular vote. The electoral defeat would be greater.
