It is a commonplace that modern civilization differs significantly from traditional cultures, even those more advanced, such as that of China and India. It is widely understood that the enterprise of rational investigation begun in Greece is crucial to the development of modernity, and that no other culture developed mathematics, philosophy, or natural history on as systematic a basis.
