Bush carried the combined Republican and Independent vote handily. It was the 20% of the vote that the Dems provided in their campaign of electoral sabotage that gave their man McCain the victory. Most of that vote will stay Dem in November.

Your analysis is backwards. Bush has a better chance of garnering independent votes than McCain does in getting religious conservatives that will flock to Buchanan. With McCain Buchanan gets into the debates.
