I've heard claims to the effect that SUN is simply holding back UltraSparc III for the lack of any competition. I don't
buy it. Something is wrong. TI fabs the chip and has excellent .18um groundrule generation silicon technology. I don't think they are the holdup. I suspect the design is just not yet clean. When Intel starts shipping processors that support multiple SUN MIPS at multiple lower prices, I think the "architectural dominance" argument will suddenly
not seem so appealing. SUN needs to get moving on this. The combination of good TI silicon technology and a good design should enable them to hold off any challenges for the foreseeable future. With these delays, they are only leaving the door open to competition.
