One thing that is different between your two groups is that things like cell phone growth can indeed affect the traditional business pattern for the semiconductor industry. There is not something directly analogous in the biotech industry, but something indirectly analogous. The significant increase in Wall Street funding means two things - more projects moving forward at a better pace, thereby shortening somewhat the time before progress is seen for a company AND the portion of the stock valuation discounting price for failure is greatly diminished.
