Eric And Pat...you two seem very knowledgeable in this area and I was wondering if either of you would give a primer explaining how Wink, Optv, etc. all fit into the picture. See OPTV climbing in the stratosphere on this deal with Dish...

Here's my limited understanding culled from Yahoo profiles:
OpenTV Corp. designs, develops, markets and supports software and related components to enables digital interactive television worldwide.

Lbrt:
Liberate Technologies provides a comprehensive software platform that enables the delivery of Internet-enhanced content and applications to a broad range of information appliances. Using the Liberate software platform, network operators can deliver a new generation of interactive digital content and applications to their subscribers. Manufacturers of information appliances use the Company's software to add Internet capability to their products. In addition, network operators and information appliance manufacturers use the Liberate open platform cooperatively to create a uniform environment for developers to enhance existing content and create new Internet applications and services for delivery on multiple information appliances. Subscribers will be able to access these Internet-enhanced applications and services from anywhere at anytime.

wink:
Wink Communications provides a complete end-to-end system for low-cost electronic commerce on television. The Company's system, Wink Enhanced Broadcasting, allows advertisers, merchants and broadcast and cable networks to create interactive enhancements to traditional television advertisements and programs. With a click of the remote control, viewers can utilize this free service to purchase merchandise, or request product samples, coupons or catalogues. Similarly, viewers can use Wink to access program-related information, such as news, sports and weather, participate in votes and polls, and play along with game shows. Wink allows viewers to access additional information about a specific news story from CNN Headline News or scores and statistics from ESPN, respond to an offer for telecommunications services from AT&T, obtain coupons and product samples from Clorox or enter a virtual shopping mall which offers products for sale through dedicated interactive channels.

It sounds like OPTV is purely digital? Lbrt has all kinds of apps, and Wink has zeroed in on low end/interactive?...

I'm not much of a techie and this is an area I know nothing about, just intuitively that interactive/digital TV will be huge at some point. Thanks for any other info...PoetTrader

Eric --

I did confuse the COO with Rogers Communications. Sorry about that. I've been researching Rogers Comm and must have had it on the brain.

Just heard that MSFT & Philips Electronics are going to begin making set-tops boxes and "O/S"!!! Look out!!!

Are MSFT and Philips working with LBRT now? I saw Philips at CES but didn't see MSFT.

TIA --

Pat

Problem with all interactive TV OS's so far is that it does not
control the VCR and use it as a drive.
