jaytee: Sadly, the only way to determine if an on-line firm is good for you is to open an account, send 'em some money and make a few trades. I've been unhappy with several firms. Using Datek now, they're pretty fast at executing and reporting (usually 10 seconds) and they update your account immediately. But they do not do options and their list of "shortable" stocks is minimal. It's wise to have a back-up firm in case your primary firm goes down and also to be able to buy/sell options and short many stocks if this is your desire. (Lee)
