PC Sales in Jan. 2000 Reach Same Level as December 1999
February 23, 2000 (TOKYO) -- PC retail sales in Japan in January 2000 matched those of the peak winter sales season of December 1999, according to GfK Japan Ltd., an information analysis company.

The company, which deals with POS data of 55 mass retailers of home electric appliances, said that unit-based PC sales in January 2000 at 2,000 shops (of those retailers) in Japan increased by 1.1 percent from a month earlier and by 84.6 percent compared with January 1999.

PC sales in terms of units sold in January are inclined to plunge from those in December. January 1998 sales decreased by 25.5 percent from December 1997, and January 1999 sales dropped by 30.0 percent from December 1998. Compared with past years, January 2000 saw a remarkable sales record.

The favorable PC sales in January 2000 are supported mostly by two factors. One factor is Y2K. Customers concerned about the Y2K problem had refrained from buying PCs at the end of 1999, but rushed to retail stores just after the new year rolled over. This extended the peak of this winter sales season into the first week of January.

The second reason is that PC makers began to launch spring models in January, earlier than usual. This also led to the earlier start of spring sales, resulting in increased January sales. Shops with new models on display are attracting more customers, and they are expected to see good sales in February 2000 compared with the same month the previous year.

On the basis of GfK Japan's entire data that covers 3,200 shops, PC sales in January 2000 decreased by 1.3 percent from a month earlier in terms of units, and by 3.7 percent in terms of value. Although these sales figures are not as good as those obtained from the data covering 2,000 shops, the figures still clearly reached the level of December 1999. Compared with January 1999, January 2000 sales of the 3,200 shops rose by 87.8 percent in units, and by 65.4 percent in value.
