**OT** Dell selects Indian-owned firm for products sale

New York: Selectica (TM) Inc., a San Jose-based Internet selling system (ISS) provider founded and owned by Indian Americans, has announced that Dell Computer Corporation will use its flagship product to standardise its customer outreach.

Raj Jaswa, president and CEO, Sanjiv Mittal, chief technical officer and vice president of engineering, and Ashish Mathur, vice president of worldwide professional services, make up most of Selectica's leadership team and all three are graduates of various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Dell, regarded as one of the leaders in e-commerce, chose Selectica's award-winning ACE (TM) Enterprise to help customers purchase personal systems, including desktop and notebook PCs. Dell will also use ACE Enterprise to support telesales and direct sales forces accessing the system over its intranet and extranets.

"Our environment is uniquely challenging and we needed a system to support our high-volume, mission-critical Internet selling needs as well as integrate with our industry-leading manufacturing and supply chain systems," said Ben Hasan, director of product group IT (information technology) at Dell.

"Selectica proved to us that they were the commercial system that could best meet our challenge. The ability to standardise on a single platform will enable us to realise tremendous productivity improvements," Hasan said.

Jaswa expressed his company's satisfaction at being Dell's choice adding, "when combined with other strategic wins in the marketplace, this clearly establishes Selectica as a leader in Internet-based selling for complex products and services."

Mittal maintained that Dell's selection of Selectica "is further proof that Global 2000 companies see the strategic value of standardising on one unified enterprise-wide knowledge-base for Internet-based selling across all channels."

Selectica ACE claims to enable businesses to easily develop and rapidly deploy an Internet sales channel that interactively assists their customers, partners and employees through the selection, configuration, pricing, quoting and fulfillment processes.

Selectica, a privately held corporation, has among its current customers 3Com, Aspect Communications, BMW, Centigram, Cisco Systems, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard, Juniper Networks, Samsung Electronics and Siemens.

Jaswa, a co-founder, has served as chairman, president and CEO of Selectica since its inception in 1996. He received his electrical engineering degree from IIT, masters in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto and his management degree from Stetson University.

Mittal received his bachelors in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur and masters and doctorate in computer science from Ohio State University. He is well known for his work in configuration, artificial intelligence and object-oriented programming.

Mathur also got his electrical engineering from IIT, followed by a masters in computer science from the University of Southern California.
