<<Look at the turnout at the polls, how many young and first time voters. Something is moving them, and it is not some well organized Democrat machine. Sorry, but I just don't buy that>>

Great point. As a late-twenties moderate-independent, I love neither the democrats or republicans as a party. However, I have for some time now considered myself a democrat-by-default simply because the religious right scares the crap out of me. I think there are many out there like me who would vote republican (based on a platform of reform, integrity, tax cuts, debt paydown, and defense) if the candidate could manage to distance himself from the establishment ultra conservative right (NRA, bible beaters, pro-lifers).

I think McCain has done this very adeptly and that this fact goes a long way to explain why people like myself are showing up to support him.

I agree that the race is less substance and more image. The image of McCain right now is that of a vindictive whiner.

Bush is optimistic and has a vision of where America should be. McCain is pessimistic and so far has articulated nothing.
