A "White Paper? warning China would use "drastic measures," including a military invasion, if Taiwan continued to stonewall discussions about rejoining the mainland drew a stern reaction from Defense Department officials.
China would face "incalculable consequences" if it followed through on threats to use force in their efforts to force Taiwan to become part of Mainland China, a top Pentagon official warned.

"If it [the white paper] says what it appears to say, is a new and troubling formula." said Walter B. Slocombe, an undersecretary of Defense just back from conference in Beijing on strategic issues.

In anticipation of the possible election of hard-liner Chen Shui-ban, a front runner in the race for the presidency in the forthcoming March 18 elections, China's State Council issued the "white paper" warning that China would use "drastic measures," including a military invasion, if Taiwan continued (cont)
