(NYSE:GTW - news), the second-largest direct seller of personal computers, on Wednesday set a goal of reaching $30 billion in sales by 2004 and said it aims for most of its profits at that time to come from sales of items other than personal computers. Gateway, based in San Diego, also said it expects those so-called non-system sales, culled from non-PC sales, to hit 40 percent by the end of 2000, which is 10 percentage points higher than its previously announced goal for the year. In 1999, Gateway had sales of $8.65 billion and earned $427.9 million, or $1.32 a share. Gateway also announced other efforts to boost sales in services and other areas. It said that it will team up with Sun Microsystems Inc. (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news), the largest seller of computer servers to Internet service providers and Web sites, to provide big-business customers with Gateway computers and Sun's Internet-based computing solutions. It also announced plans to create 1,000 Gateway-managed ``stores within a store' at OfficeMax (NYSE:OMX - news) stores, similar to Apple Computer Inc.'s (NasdaqSC:APPL - news) successful stores in CompUSA Inc. (NYSE:CPU - news) outlets. The company also announced plans to partner with eSoft (OTC BB:ESFT.OB - news) to provide small businesses with upgradeable Internet solutions. Gateway's shares were up by just over $9 to $66.25 in early afternoon New York Stock Exchange trading.
