Hi c.horn,
Gosh, I am so sorry to hear that Snapper is not feeling well.
I pulled up this link, alltheweb.com, hopefully you can find some good information there.

Is your cat getting enough water? Sounds simple. But one of my cats had stool that was hard-as-a-rock and dry-as-sand until he started drinking enough (as an adult age, he was learning how to drink on his own, it's a long story).

This isn't meant to delay your taking him to a vet.

Best wishes for his speedy recovery.

I add a little mineral oil, just a drop or two, to my cats food to help with the passing of hairballs. A side effect of this is a softer stool. I only give the mineral oil in two meals a week. The vet recommended this when my cats refused to eat or lick the stuff you buy for hairballs that comes in the tube.
