Does GTW get hit with sales tax when it sells thru web to someone in a state where it has a country store?

RESEARCH ALERT - Gateway upgraded by two firms

NEW YORK, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Two brokerage firms on Thursday said they upgraded their investment ratings of computer maker Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW - news).

-- Bear Stearns upgraded Gateway to buy from attractive.

-- Analyst Andrew Neff said the upgrade was based on the company's potential for increasing momentum as it broadens its distribution in the United States and in Europe, receives new revenue from Internet appliance products in the coming months and increases its non-hardware revenue to 40 percent of income.

-- Gateway shares have upside potential of $85-$90 over the next six to 12 months.

-- The 2000 estimate of $1.82 versus $1.36 was retained but the 2001 estimate was raised to $2.30 from $2.20.

-- Gateway shares have upside potential of $85-$90 over the next six to 12 months, Credit Suisse said.

-- Banc of America Securities analyst Kurt King upgraded Gateway to strong buy from buy and raised its price target to $90 from $80.

-- On Wednesday Gateway's analysts' meeting featured the announcement of three major partnerships with OfficeMax (NYSE:OMX - news), Sun Microsystems Inc. (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news) and eSoft Inc. (NasdaqSC:ESFT - news), which could prompt Banc of America to increase its later-period estimates.

-- King said Gateway becomes more insulated from tough PC industry fundamentals with each passing quarter and pointed to management's expectation that beyond-the-box income will grow to 40 percent of income by the end of 2000, which is up from the previous target of 30 percent.

-- Shares of Gateway were up 6-7/8 at 74-1/2 in trade on the New York Stock Exchange.>>
