You are of course right, though I still retain a shadow of doubt about how a relevant a philosophy of detachment, rooted in a cultural matrix so much the opposite of ours, can be to a modern American. As a matter of study, it is of course reasonable, but attempting to live by that philosophy poses the risk of using it to avoid a necessary degree of engagement.

It is of course a very complex matter.

This is totally off-topic, but knowing that we agree on most conspiracy theories, I have to pass on a quote I just came across, ascribed to Napoleon:

"Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence."

I liked that.
