Most Celerons run at 2.0 volts - so Joshua will require Motherboards that can either already HANDLE the higher Vcc - or they will have to spec out higher Vcc boards - limiting any market penetration.>

Boards supporting Joshua and Celeron have been in works for a long time. VIA can bundle chipset, CPU with cheap Taiwanese DRAM and sell the whole package for $120 or so. Penetration in the US probably is going to be very small but VIA will probably go aggressively after Emachines business - may have a shot at picking some business until Timna shows up.

And you think that's bad? Has it occurred to you that there are tens of millions of socket 7 motherboards out there that can't supply voltage lower than 2.2, but can supply 2.2?

By keeping the voltage at 2.2, they'll probably sell several million additional parts per quarter as upgrades - that will be purchased instead of 2.0 volt Celerons. Even if Intel goes back to socket 7 (as has been rumored may happen) cyrix (and AMD) will own this market.

Let's just wait and see if the clock multiplier pins are set up so that existing 1X, 1.5X, etc. settings for 133, 166, etc. will, on the CIII, select 433, 466. (so that motherboards without such settings will accept CIIIs).

If they're smart, the CIII will be a drop in for existing Super 7 boards like the Asus P5 - a 5 minute upgrade.

Justa bout all the motherboards support 2.2 Volts. A lot of people overclock the Celeron and run it at 2.2 Volts, even 2.3 Volts. Not supporting voltages higher than 2.2 would be a suicide for a motherboard maker, because they would get the lowest scores from the online hardware sites.
