I don't know enough about biotech, so I let FIDO do the heavy lifting and just buy their BIOTECH fund, now up about 50% this year so far.

I have the same problem with investing in Biotechs.

On the one hand, the payoffs are going to be huge. In fact, huge isn't a big enough word to describe this sector. Think of the semiconductor industry in the 60's. That's Biotech today. If people pay big bucks for PCs and DVD players today, what will they pay for life-extending drugs tomorrow?

On the other hand, Biotech just don't have the visibility of earnings that semis do. Too often they have only one good drug in the pipeline, and the payoff is still years away.

I normally hold just ten stocks, and try to buy each new pick at about 8-10% of my portfolio. I either go on margin or sell something when I pick a new one. But I think I'm going to have to do Biotech differently. Maybe I'll buy small amounts of more companies.
