Production of Taiwan's 4th-generation TFT-LCDs Set to Start February 24, 2000 (TAIPEI) - Taiwan's production of large-size thin-film transistor liquid-crystal displays (TFT-LCD) will start in 2001. To remain competitive, Taiwan's TFT-LCD industry will extend its production scale and move into the development of high-end and high-margin models. Major Taiwan-based TFT-LCD producers, including Acer Display Technology Inc. and Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd., plan to begin test production of their fourth-generation models by the end of this year. According to Chunghwa officials, investments in the development of the company's second production line have reached NT$23.8 billion so far this year. The company expects its monthly production volume to total 60,000 units of 680mm by 880mm TFT-LCD panels. Mass production of Chunghwa's fourth-generation TFT-LCD will begin in the second quarter of 2001. Acer Display expects its first and second production plants to turn out 100,000 panels a month when its second plant begins a test run by the end of this year. The company has installed production lines for 680mm x 880mm devices in its two TFT-LCD plants, for the manufacturing of large-sized models. Company officials said that a total of 30,000 panels can be produced at its first plant. Acer Display will start mass production of its 14.1-in. and 17-in. panels in late February. Sales of 14-in. panels are predicted to reach 10,000 units a month beginning in the second quarter. Acer's sales of its 1.3-in. models are estimated to reach 80,000 units this month.
