multichannel.com Cable, Set Makers Agree on Standards Washington -- Under pressure from regulators, the cable industry and TV-set makers announced Wednesday that they have agreed on standards that will allow consumers with digital-TV sets to receive cable programs and on-screen channel guides. Federal Communications Commission chairman William Kennard -- who threatened to impose standards on the industries when progress appeared stalled -- hailed the announcement by the National Cable Television Association and the Consumer Electronics Association. "Today's announcement of industry agreement on digital-TV technical standards will jump-start the digital revolution for television," Kennard said. But he added that he does not expect "cable-ready" sets -- those with digital-cable set-top functions built-in -- to be on the market until Christmas 2001. FCC commissioner Susan Ness, in a separate statement, said she was pleased with the agreement, but she urged caution because the NCTA and the CEA failed to reach agreement on accurate labeling of sets and the copyright protection of premium programming. "We can't declare victory when the game's only at halftime," Ness said. - 2/23/00
