HJ -- Good to hear from you. Japan is trying to restructure on two fronts: First, the old guys are supposed to face up to the stupendous losses they racked up years ago and let go of their access to the public purse to feed their bad habits. Second, a "new generation" is setting the stage for a new economy. The first form of restructuring is stuck in the slow lane -- the really slow lane. The second form is picking up speed and probably is in the same lane as the first -- but going in the opposite direction. If the old guys don't get their butts kicked soon, and kicked but good, then Japan will really start to drown in its own red ink. Looking at what is happening in other countries - Iran comes to mind -- perhaps there is an inter-generational thing happening world-wide. Have you been to Malaysia? The government is overly "helpful", but the infrastructure is heavy duty (airport, roads, housing), and the Malaysians are really likeable and capable -- I hope they make it. Sooner or later, environmental issues are going to come to the fore in Asia -- as in environmental crisis.
