Nextel strikes wireless Web pacts with five cos
RESTON, Va., Feb 23 (Reuters) - Wireless phone service provider Nextel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: NXTL) on Wednesday said it had formed pacts with five companies to strengthen the wireless data service it will roll out this year.

Nextel said in a statement it had formed alliances with International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM), Aether Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: AETH), Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), MicroStrategy Inc. (NASDAQ: MSTR) and eDispatch.com Wireless Data Inc. (VSE: EWD) to offer wireless Internet applications through Nextel Online.

Nextel Online is scheduled to become available in the second quarter.

"Nextel Online services will enable users to transact business wherever they are on the Nextel National Network allowing them to receive critical business information and act upon it quickly," said Tom Kelly, Nextel's executive vice president marketing & strategic planning.
