China says has basic understanding with EU on WTO

BEIJING, Feb 24 (Reuters) - China has reached a basic understanding with
the European Union on a trade deal that would smooth its entry to the World
Trade Organisation and has invited EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy for
further talks, state television reported on Thursday.

Earlier, the EU said no agreement had been reached after four days of talks
to liberalise trade, and no date had been set for them to resume.

"The Chinese government and the EU have reached a basic understanding,"
state television said. "The views are basically converging."

"The Chinese government is inviting Lamy to China for talks," it said, without
providing further details.

It was the first official comment from the Chinese side on the outcome of
negotiations aimed at overcoming the biggest remaining obstacle to China's
inclusion in the 135 member WTO.

It was not immediately clear how the EU's downbeat assessment of the talks
squared with the optimistic pronouncements as reported by Chinese state
television.
