Dow drops below 10,000, Nasdaq slides

(Updates to late morning)

NEW YORK, Feb 24 (Reuters) - U.S. blue-chip stocks were hammered in late morning trading on Thursday with the Dow
Jones industrial average falling below the 10,000 mark in a sharp and broad pullback.

``It's inevitable,' said Bill Meehan, chief market analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald, said of the Dow dropping below 10,000. ``But I
don't think the Dow is particularly important to look at in any case.'

Technology stocks also dropped and the Nasdaq turned negative after rallying into record territory in the first hour.
