Global Crossing makes $80 mln Irish link

DUBLIN, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Global Crossing brought a new $80 million cable link to Ireland on Thursday which will connect the
country to the U.S. telecom company's global network.

The cable was brought ashore at a beach in County Wexford in the south east of Ireland. The fibre optic cable will be able to
handle up to 30 million phone calls simultaneously and is scheduled to be fully operational in Ireland on June 30.

The 500 km cable system links White Sands in south-west England with Ballinesker Beach in County Wexford. It was installed by Global Marine Systems, the
submarine cable company acquired recently by Global Crossing.

Ireland's Public Enterprise Minister Mary O'Rourke said the cable would boost the country's ambitions of becoming the centre for e-commerce in Europe.

``The landing of the cable means our international connectivity -- vital if we are to successfully roll out business on the Internet -- will increase 15 times and at a
fraction of market prices,' she said.
