Marc Cabi,
China Unicom CDMA project delayed
FY00E: $0.96 FY01E: $1.27
The Wall Street Journal reported that China has indefinitely postponed deployment of Unicom's CDMA network in China.
Unicom had previously announced intentions to deploy a network with a subscriber capacity of 10 million by year-end. We
believe the China CDMA opportunity could approach $2-3B/year for the infrastructure vendors, although delays continue to
plague the project and push out the dates.
We have seen the path to CDMA deployment in China delayed before by political wrangling, and are not surprised by the
latest news. We have remained cautious in our modeling of these sales until we see greater certainty that the network is
rolling out.
The status should be watched by investors of QCOM, as the company would receive increased chip sales and royalties if
CDMA were to proliferate in China.
We are not changing our model, as we have not "baked" China expectations into our numbers.
