Brian I would agree with you. CREE's SiC production methods ARE the "discontinuous, disruptive, innovation". The LED product helped bring SiC across the Chasm and formed/forming the value chain. Each product that will use CREE's method of creating SiC is a new bowling alley (e.g. LED's). LED's are the current alley we are playing in. When enough 'bowling alleys' are in place then we will be in a full scale tornado. I, personally, don't think it will take more than another product or two for a full blown tornado to be upon us. And man ... what a tornado it will be! HUGE!!! Encompassing 10's, 20's (hundreds?) of potential markets!

My only concern is CREE attempting to control the SiC production. I would MUCH rather see them license their SiC production methods out and receive royalties from HUNDREDS of other companies all producing SiC and products based on SiC. Think of the value chain and stream of royalties that could be produced!

RE: Interesting Employment Opportunities at Cree.

cree.com

A few that I thought interesting:

Laser Development Program Leader
Responsible for driving Cree's product development team to successful commercialization of Cree's first blue semiconductor laser diode.

RF Components Production Manager
Build, lead and manage Cree's RF Components Production Operation to meet business objectives. The primary focus of this position is to manage the day-to-day production of RF wide bandgap discrete power and integrated circuit devices and assemblies. Leadership from both a technical and operational view is essential to evolve products from development to pilot and full-scale production.

RF Products Sales Manager
Build, lead and manage Cree's RF Sales operation to meet business objectives. The focus of this position is to manage the sales operation of Cree's microwave and RF products.

Some one here previously mentioned looking at these. I thought it would be good to post for all to see.
Look's to me like Cree is finding other applications for their primary product, SiC.

briank, just when I think I have it straight in my head, someone throws a twist into the works that makes me reconsider what I've been thinking.

OK, so if I have it right, what you, mtnlady, and Sunny are suggesting is that CREE's ability to manufacture SiC wafers is THE core discontinuous innovation that needs to be considered first and foremost. Secondarily, once these wafers are produced, CREE also has IPR necessary to convert the blank SiC wafers into all sorts of semiconductors (LEDs being just one - and perhaps the tip of the iceberg). Each of these products has the potential to be a discontinuous innovation in and of itself and may enter a bowling alley and spawn a tornado.

Have I got it right? If so, I'll need to think about it a little and see if it changes my view of things.

Anybody else can jump in if it will clarify things for me.
